Abstract:
In 1965, T. J. Willmore conjectured that the integral of the
square of the mean curvature of a torus immersed in space is at least
2pi^2. I will talk about my recent work with Fernando Marques and
explain how this conjecture follows from the min-max theory for
minimal surfaces.
