Some information on this course:

1. Book used: Michael Artin, Algebra, Prentice-Hall, Inc.
The edition I'm using is May 1991, which is the only one available as far as I know.

2. Notation used in listing the exercises: The expression a.b.c signifies:
Chapter a, Section b, Exercise c.
It can happen that b=M; this refers to the miscellaneous problems section.

3. Lectures are on MWF, 10-11 AM in 2-105.
Attendance is strongly encouraged. The course material is the mathematics discussed in the lectures
plus the reading material announced in class.

4. Homeworks assigned:  usually in the Friday lecture.
More precisely: last lecture of the week. Also see the table above.

5. Homeworks due:  There will be a box labeled 18.701 in the undergraduate math office (2-108).
Put your work in this box before 10 AM the following Friday.
You have to make sure to hand in on Thursday by 4PM if Friday is a holiday, but
hand in on Wednesday by 4PM if Thursday is also a holiday: Nov 26 (Nov 25 is holiday too).

6. Names of graders: Miki Havlickova, Anna Bohmann, Olga Stroilova
Office hours of graders: Miki, Thursday 3-4 in building 2 on the 4th floor. Change!
(Take stairs acrross from 2-290 to get to the 4th floor.)  If needed she will stay longer.

7. There will be a final exam and a midterm.
The final exam will make up roughly 30% of the final grade, and the midterm will be around 10%,
and so the assignments will make up about 60% of the grade.

8. The Midterm will be held in class on October 22.
New: The material will be the material from the lectures including the lecture on Friday Oct 15,
and the corresponding material from the book: Ch I, II and III (not III Section 5).
New: Here is an approximate grading scheme based on the scores in the midterm:
0-19         F + D + low C
20-25       C
26-30       low B
31-39       not decided where split is yet
40-50       A

9. Office hours: 11-12 AM on Monday and Wednesday.

10. The above is subject to change. Bug reports welcome.
