Textbook

Calculus, Early Transcendentals (7th ed.) by James Stewart. The book should be available at the Columbia bookstore.

Course Content

This course will offer an introduction to multivariable calculus and particularly differentiation in several variables. We will cover most of the content in Chapters 10, 12-14 of the textbook with some additional sections selected from other chapters.

Grading and Examinations

There will be two midterm exams during class. Make-up exams will not be given. In case you miss a midterm because of a family or medical emergency, and the emergency is confirmed by a note from your dean, your other midterm will count for 40% of the course grade. Your course grade will be determined as follows:
Component Date Percentage
Midterm I February 16, in class 20
Midterm II March 22, in class 20
Homework Weekly 20
Final Exam Tuesday, May 08 40

All students must take the final at the time scheduled by the university. If you miss the final exam, you will need to petition the dean's office to receive a mark of INC (incomplete) and retake the final at a later day.

Homework

Weekly homework will be assigned and is an essential part of the course. Problem sets are to be submitted in the designated dropbox on the 4th floor of the math hall by 5pm on the due date (usually Tuesdays). Show your work and provide sufficient justification to receive full credit. Partial credit will be provided. No late homework will be accepted and no extensions given but the two lowest homework scores will be dropped at the end. Please staple your work.

Collaboration Policy

All homework solutions have to be your own work written in your own words. If you discuss solutions to the homework assignment with other students, please list the names of your collaborators on the write up. No collaboration or use of an outside aid is permitted during the exams. Cheating on an exam will result in a grade of F and will be reported to a dean.

Calculators

Calculators will not be permitted during the exams.
