I'll discuss some invariants of knots derived from the Heegaard Floer
homology of Ozsvath and Szabo and explain how they can be used to compute
these Floer homologies for surgeries on knots. The basic invariant is a
filtered chain complex whose filtered Euler characteristic is the
Alexander polynomial of the knot.
