Summer Undergraduate Research

The Mathematics Department conducts a ten-week intensive summer research program designed for rising junior and senior undergraduate mathematics (and closely related) majors. Participants in the program collaborate closely with faculty members and graduate students in a small group setting. Details about the program and application instructions are provided below.

The Mathematics Department runs an additional program for collaborative undergraduate student summer research experiences in mathematical modeling. Columbia Math Undergraduate Summer Research (CMUSR)

Program Information

Eligibility: The program invites applications from ongoing undergraduate students at Barnard and Columbia University, irrespective of U.S. residency.

The program is not open to graduating seniors and graduate students. Students who have already earned or will have earned a bachelor’s degree by August 31, 2025, are not eligible to apply. Students not currently enrolled full-time at Barnard/Columbia are not eligible to apply.

Barnard students must submit an additional application through the 2025 SRI Program. The SRI application deadline is 12:00 PM (noon) on March 5, 2025.

Program dates: May 26 – August 1, 2025.

Accepted students must commit to being on campus for the entire program duration from May 26 to August 1 and should be available in-person for all scheduled program activities. Final presentations by participants will be scheduled during the last week of the program.

Stipend: $3500 + residential housing for the duration of the program.

Participants in the summer research programs are expected to devote their full attention to the program and are not permitted to engage in any additional work or school commitments throughout the duration of their award.

For your application, you will need:
– One-page CV/resume
– One-page about your research interests and motivation for participation
– Up-to-date unofficial university transcripts
– A reference letter from a faculty member.

Barnard students must also submit an application to the Barnard’s 2025 SRI Program
