In Memoriam – Masatake Kuranishi

It is with deep sadness that Columbia Mathematics Department has learned of the passing of Masatake Kuranishi, who was a member of the Department for over forty years. His work in partial differential equations, deformation of complex structure and embeddings of CR manifolds has had a lasting impact. We will especially miss him for his kindness and his generosity in sharing his ideas with his colleagues and students.

The Department is planning on holding a memorial conference in his honor and will post further details when they are available.

CONGRATULATIONS to Professor Birman; emeritus research professor, department of mathematics, Barnard College

Professor Joan Birman was elected as a new member of the National Academy of Sciences.

“The National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit institution that was established under a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. It recognizes achievement in science by election to membership, and—with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine—provides science, engineering, and health policy advice to the federal government and other organizations.”

SPRING 2020 SAMUEL EILENBERG LECTURES

Heat Equations in Analysis, Geometry, and Probability

“In its most basic form, the heat equation is a partial differential equation that describes the evolution of temperature in space over time. This and similar equations play a central role in diverse fields. The goal is to provide an introduction to the heat equation and its generalizations, including connections to geometry and geometric flows, probability, and, of course, analysis.”
