While the cones effective and nef divisors are fundamental objects in algebraic geometry, the corresponding cones for cycles of higher codimension have been much less studied and remain more mysterious. We survey some recent developments in this area, and in particular discuss the example of nef 2-cycles on the variety of lines on a cubic fourfold.
