I have taught this course before: Fall 1999, Fall 2000, Spring 2001, Spring 2003, Spring 2004, Spring 2005, Fall 2006, Spring 2007, Fall 2007.
Including our final, there will be a total of three exams that determine the course grade.
Test | Day | Date | Time | Points |
Exam 1 | Tuesday | February 15 | in class | 30 |
Exam 2 | Tuesday | March 29 | in class | 30 |
Final | Tuesday | May 10 | 9:00 AM - Noon | 40 |
These dates do not coincide with any religious holiday which causes suspension of New York City's alternate side parking regulations; see NYC Parking Calendar.
Please discuss other conflicts with me in advance of the exam in question. Under extenuating circumstances, exams can be rescheduled to specific alternate dates and times. Missed exams will become grades of zero.
Master University Examination ScheduleLinear Algebra with Applications, 4/E , by Otto Bretscher. Pearson, 2009. ISBN-10: 0136009263, ISBN-13: 9780136009269. $144 list price. Columbia University Bookstore, Amazon ($111) or AddALL ($66 and up).
Note that the Amazon "paperback" edition is actually a solutions manual for the odd-numbered exercises. Amazon also carries a scanner-friendly loose leaf edition, in case you prefer an iPad to a 40 pound daypack, and a Cram101 Outline for this text. The Cram101 outline, an augmented class notebook, is amusing but of uncertain value. For example, your professor thinks that he's all that for mentioning in class that "rank" is also a live album by The Smiths, so you circle that entry in the outline and smirk. On the other hand, if you can read every entry in the outline and it makes sense, you do understand the course, and you can focus on the exercises. The outline makes it easier to resell the textbook as unmarked.
The teaching assistants for this course are Lindsay Piechnik and Marcello Cricco-Lizza.
On Thursday, February 10, Marco has office hours from 4 pm to 6 pm. On Monday, February 14, Lindsay has office hours from 3 pm to 6 pm. These hours are held in the Columbia Math Help Room (406 Math). The ongoing schedule is posted at Help Room Schedule
