Modified diagonals of projective varieties

We will provide an answer (in some cases) to the
question: when is the modified diagonal cycle rationally
equivalent to 0?  The motivation comes mainly from the
Beauville-Voisin conjecture on the splitting of the
Bloch-Beilinson filtration on the Chow ring of hyperkaehler
varieties.
