Effective divisors on the moduli space of curves

I will survey recent progress on our understanding of the global geometry
of the moduli space of curves  with emphasis on the effective and ample
cone, Kodaira dimension. In particular I will describe new ways of
constructing effective divisors on the moduli space using syzygy type
conditions.
