Hilbert's original fourteenth problem and certain moduli spaces

The original fourteenth problem asks whether the ring of
invariants is finitely generated or not for a linear representation of an
algebraic group on the polynomial ring.  In many cases this is related to
higher dimensional birational geometry and moduli problems.  I will report
recent results and development on the problem and such relations.
