If ours is an Information Age, then it naturally owes a great deal to 
the realm of applied mathematics that deals with the transmission and 
encoding of information. In this talk, we will tackle a few of the 
fundamental problems of information theory while closely following the 
landmark 1948 paper of Claude Shannon.
