The geometry of billiards -- Alice Rizzardo

The theory of mathematical billiards studies the behavior of a point-mass moving freely inside a plane domain, with elastic reflections from the boundary. This is a very popular subject (mathematically speaking!) with interesting connections to geometry and physics. I will introduce some aspects of this theory, present lots of examples, and discuss in particular the presence of periodic trajectories and the "illumination problem".

The talk will be accessible to everyone.
