Knot Floer homology is an invariant for knots defined using holomorphic disks and Lagrangian Floer homology. I will describe a purely elementary construction of this invariant, using "grid diagrams", in the special case of knots in the three-sphere. I will also explain some of the applications of this invariant.
The talk should be accessible to everybody (elementary algebra required).
