Why are mathematicians so excited about string theory? -- Charles Doran, July 27, 2004

It's clear why physicists might care about String Theory --- it could turn out to be the physical "theory of everything" that unifies all known forces of Nature!   But why should we, as mathematicians, be so excited about this progress in another discipline?  I'll give you my own take on this question through a blend of history, philosophy, and mathematical context.  An opportunity for open discussion will follow the talk.
