Zeta -- Florian Sprung, August 1, 2005

What does this greek letter mean? This talk will be divided into two parts - an ancient one and a modern one. Ironically, the modern part is more like a "history of math" talk, while the ancient part is more rigorous - with results by Euler and others, and some beautiful (short) proofs. One famous conjecture (the Riemann hypothesis) will mark the transition into the modern part, and we will encounter a wide range of $zeta$s. The goal of this talk is to state the famous Weil conjectures (1949) in a way accessible to anybody. The entire talk is, as always, accessible to anybody as well.
